Vitamin E is touted as a miracle anti-aging vitamin. Many people take it in the form of supplements and use skincare that contain vitamin E hoping to stop the clock. How is vitamin E related to aging in the first place?

For one thing, vitamin E is an antioxidant. It neutralizes free radicals that would otherwise damage skin cells. Free radicals are formed by your body"s natural processes. These unstable molecules that would steal electrons from the molecules it bumps into. Basically, they damage cell membranes and even the dna of the cells. It is believed that aging is due to the action of these free radicals.

Antioxidants, like vitamin E, contribute the missing electron, neutralizing the free radicals, preventing them from damaging the cells. Hence, antioxidants are used in antiaging formulas, from supplements, to skin care products.

Your skin is exposed to free radicals everyday. UV rays of the sun, pollution and other enviromental factors increase your skin"s exposure to free radicals. Hence including antioxidants like vitamins C and E are often used in skincare products.

Vitamin E actually is found in 8 different forms. It is generally found in vegetable oils and in many of the foods we consume. Wheatgerm oil is exceptionally rich in this vitamin, as is soya bean oil. Modern technology is able to synthesize vitamin E so many of today"s supplements contain the synthetic form of vitamin E.

In aromatherapy, carrier oils and oil blends are often mixed with a little wheatgerm oil to prevent oxidation, to preserve the oil so it can last longer.

The Body Shop has an entire line of skin care products with vitamin E as the main active ingredient. Apparently, it is very good. The other day at a warehouse sale a woman grabbed an entire carton of vitamin E lotion. Each carton contained dozens of bottles, so that lotion must really work for her to do that.

That got me curious about that vitamin E skincare line.

Basically, The Body Shop"s vitamin E line uses vitamin E from 3 different sources: wheat germ oil, soyabean oil and a synthetic form of vitamin E. The newest addition to the line, the vitamin e moisture serum bosts of organic honey as well as these 3 sources of vitamin E, in a pre-moisturizing treat for your skin. Apply your regular moisturizer over it.

Vitamin E supplementation on the other hand has recently been linked with an increased death rate in elderly people. There is much debate about the safety of higher doses of vitamin E at 400iu or more, so do check that if your multivitamin contains vitamin E, it is at a much lower dosage.
