I chanced upon matcha, or a premium form of Japanese green tea at the mall yesterday. There was a cafe specializing in matcha. Something like a Starbucks for tea lovers. Even the cakes and desserts were made of green tea. There were energy bars with green tea in it.
Fascinated, I had my lunch there. A set with soup and sandwich and a huge cup of sweetened matcha with milk. Delicious. And healthy. Green tea is supposed to help prevent all sorts of ailments, from diabetes to high cholesterol to bad breath. Anyway, it helps one lose weight and slows down the effects of aging. Green tea has flavenoids. In particular, catechins. While black tea has only 4% catechins, green tea has 25% catechins. Premium green tea or matcha has even more. It is grown in the shade to force the plant to produce even more chlorophyll.
Even the preparation of matcha requires a lot more care than regular green tea leaves. It is ground into a powder very slowly to preserve all the goodness and you drink the ground tea with the matcha.
