One of the things that makes you look older is the middle aged bulge.
You don't even have to be middle aged to get that bulge. Even teenagers may suffer from that tummy problem.
It gets worse after pregnancy. You know, when the baby leaves, what's left is a loose, empty belly that hopefully shrinks back to normal. I say hopefully. Breastfeeding after pregnancy helps, if you are lucky. I'm not. I was left with a saggy middle that was embarassing. It didn't help that I got pregnant again soon after that. Before I had much chance to shed those pounds.

Back to the part of getting rid of the tummy. Besides diet and aerobic exercise like jogging and swimming. (5 minutes warm up, at least 30 minutes of jogging or swimming and another 5 minutes), you have to work on your abs. The correct way.
Don't do the old fashioned sit ups. You can hurt your back. Do crunches instead. That's what the trainer in the gym told me anyway.

He is right.
The old fashioned sit ups did leave my back aching but did next to nothing for my tummy. Crunches and leg lifts left my abs, the tummy area aching, meaning that those were the muscles that were working during the crunches and leg lifts.
If you can afford it, go to a gym and sign up for a few sessions with a trainer. If not, then at least do some crunches and leg lifts on your own.
Leg Lifts
- Lie flat on your back. On a rubber mat or something soft if possible.
- Bend your knees at right angles with your calves parallel to the ground. This is the starting position.
- Slowly lift your bended legs closed together as high as possible
- Slowly lower your legs closed together to the starting position.
- Repeat until you can't lift those legs any more. That would be one set. Target to eventually be able to do 3 sets.
Crunches
These are like regular sit ups, except that you don't go all the way up.- Lie flat on your back but raise your legs on a bench, chair whatever so that your legs are at right angles and your calves are parallel to the ground.
- Hands behind your head, slowly move your upper body off the ground as though doing a sit up. Don't pull your head with your hands though. Force your abs to do the work.
- Slowly lower your upper body until your back is flat on the ground again.
- Repeat until you can't get up any more. That would be one set. Target to eventually be able to do 3 sets.
If you can, read some magazines for the articles on getting in shape. Some have rather good exercises you could follow. You could subscribe to them or read them in your local library.
